<description>Wed May 22 2013 7:30 pm: Literature Matters

Talks by members of the Department of English, University of Saskatchewan at Grace-Westminster United Church

Please join us for the fifth talk in our 2013 series:

Naqaa Abbas, University of Western Ontario Scheherazade Goes West: The Arabian Nights in Western Literature and Culture

Wednesday, 22 May 2013 at 7:30 p.m.

Social Hall, Grace-Westminster United Church, 505-10th St. East

This talk will outline the history of the Arabian Nights – also known as One Thousand and One Nights, and its translations into European languages. It will discuss how and why the West projected a view of the Orient that combined reality and fantasy, fascination and fear as well as admiration and revulsion when reading these stories. By looking at the tales’ influence on Western literary works, art and music, I will address the following questions: What made these stories so fascinating to people all over the western world? What role do these fantastical tales play in depicting the Other? How does Scheherazade’s voice represent the Orientalist female figure?
