Roles and Responsibilities

Principal Investigator

Research Management
- Work with Research Services to establish projects
- Prepare all required technical reports
- Notify Research Services of any change in academic status
- Notify Research Services when the activity associated with a research project is complete
- Ensure all funds are maintained in a positive balance
- Authorize all expenditures against projects
  - May delegate signing authority by completing the Request to Delegate Signing Authority form
- Ensure all expenditures are in compliance with University policies & procedures, terms & conditions of the funding agency and the project budget
Financial Management
- Prepare, submit and approve source documents for all transactions
- Ensures cut-off dates for transactions are met
  - HR and Payroll
  - Financial month closes at 4:30 of the second working day of the following month
- Ensure all financial transactions have been properly recorded prior to closing a project

Department Head/Dean

Approve the establishment of a research fund
Assume responsibility for activities associated with research projects in their department
Approve claims for reimbursement to the Principal Investigator

Research Services

Authorize the opening of a research fund
Ensure compliance with University policies
Authorize the closing of a research fund
Notify Financial Reporting of any changes in academic status of researchers
Notify sponsors of any changes in academic status of researchers

Financial Reporting

Create funds to manage research activities
Notify Principal Investigator of the fund number once it has been opened
Close funds upon direction from Research Services
Prepare and submit all required invoices and financial reports to the sponsor
Ensure compliance with the terms of the contract and/or funding agency guidelines
