Administration
and general is used primarily by central administration units.
Administration and general includes all activities provided by an
institution in direct support of Instruction and non-sponsored
research. This includes costs of central university administrative
units (including financial and research administration) and centralized
units supporting academic and research programs (such as the
Vice-Presidents' offices). This also includes registrar's and graduate
students office (including calendars, admissions, student records and
related reporting), convocation and ceremonies, central animal
services, distance education support and academic class scheduling. |

Community Services - general |

Community
services include all activities intended to benefit the overall
community, but are not the main mission of the University (excluding
non-credit instruction.) This would include professional consultation
by University members and participation in community projects. Examples
include: Sport camps run by Kinesiology and other fee for service
activities |

Computing - centralized - general |
|
|
Centralized
computing facilities and resources. These would be restricted to those
centralized resources managed under the Associate Vice President,
Information and Communication Technology, primarily Information and
Technology Services. |

Computing - decentralized - general |
|
|
Decentralized computing facilities and resources within Colleges and Units.
This would include College and unit support staff and systems. |

3002 |
Communications - centralized |
|
|
Includes all centralized communication facilities and resources. This would
primarily include the activities of Telephone Services.

External relations |
|
|
External
relations include all activities provided by an institution in support
of ongoing external relations. These activities include fundraising,
development, alumni, public relations and public information or
external communications. External relations would include activities of
University Advancement. |

4000 |
Instruction & non-sponsored research - general (Academic and College
Administration) |
|
|
This
includes the primary activities of the institution, in its mission of
teaching and research. This would include the majority of expenditures
within the academic Colleges and departments. All direct costs of
colleges, academic departments (including salaries of academic deans
and their offices), graduate school, summer school, credit extension,
and other academic functions and expenditures are attributable to this
function. |

Library and Archives |

The
activities related to the official University Library and University
Archives, including their related collections are recorded using the
Library and Archives program codes. This program code should not be
used for collections within a department or unit. |

Non-credit instruction - general |
|
|
The
Non-credit instruction function includes lectures, courses and similar
activities that are not recognized by the institution for the purpose
of granting credit. Non-credit programs are usually offered through
continuing education units. |

Student services - general |
|
|
The
Student services function includes the cost of services (other than
direct teaching, research and general administrative services) provided
to students by the institution. This would include student awards,
financial aid, career guidance, intramural and intercollegiate
athletics, student programs (such as Greystone singers), and other
student services, social or cultural activities funded by the
institution. (See Administration and General for definition of student
related activities that would be recorded with that program code.) |
