RE: Travel Advisory
University employees traveling abroad
should exercise caution as the recent military action by coalition
countries, including Canada, in Afghanistan has raised the possibility
of significantly increased dangers. As a result, it is more important
now than ever before to insure that you take measures to protect
yourself while traveling. To assist you in your own decision process
and
risk assessment, we recommend that, at a minimum, you consider the
following:
- It
is recommended that all persons planning international travel visit the
website maintained by the Department of Foreign Affairs and
International Trade (DFAIT) prior to making travel arrangements. This
website provides a checklist to assist in ensuring a safe trip:
- Also, be sure to check the Country Travel Report that provides current information for specific
destinations and the Current Issues page at the following:
- Before you travel, be sure to check the terms of your out-of-country medical, travel accident,
trip cancellation, baggage and other insurance policies. Many insurance policies exclude coverage for claims relating to war
risks, whether war has been declared or not. Note: Group life insurance provided by the University does not exclude
war or terrorism risks.
- Increased
security measures and regulations can cause significant delays. Check
with your travel agent or airline about recommended check-in times for
your flight, and be aware of the specific security rules for carry-on
luggage and contents for your selected airline. The following website
provides a summary of new carry-on baggage requirements for Air Canada:
