Celebration of Teaching 2011

On April 27th, the Vice-Provost Teaching and Learning, along with the Gwenna Moss Centre, hosted the 2011 University of Saskatchewan Celebration of Teaching.  This event included a series of brief reflections on the new U of S Learning Charter, presented by the Provost, a 3M winner, a Master Teacher, and student leaders.  The event culminated in presentation of the Provost's teaching awards for 2011 and special recognition of the University’s award-winning teachers during the past academic year.

The recipients of the campus-wide Provost’s Teaching Awards, who were formally presented with their awards on April 27th, are:

  • Provost's Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Education: Alexandria Wilson (Educational Foundations);
  • Provost's Award for Excellence in International Teaching: James Mullens (Religion and Culture);
  • Provost's Award for Outstanding Innovation in Learning: Ken Van Rees (Soil Science);
  • Provost's Award for Outstanding Graduate Teacher: Douglas Akhimienmhonan (Agricultural Economics);
  • Provost's Award for Outstanding New Teacher: Simonne Horwitz (History)

The winners of the Provost's College Awards for Outstanding Teaching (college specific) are:

  • Nicholas Low (College of Agriculture & Bioresources)
  • Garry Gable (College of Arts and Science, humanities and fine arts)

2010 Celebration of Teaching

On April 19, the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness hosted the U of S Celebration of Teaching reception to honour the university’s outstanding teachers during the past academic year. More than 150 guests attended the reception at Convocation Hall where the inaugural winners of the Provost’s Teaching Awards were announced.

The recipients of the campus-wide Provost’s Teaching Awards are:

  • Provost's Award for Outstanding Innovation in Learning: Fred Phillips (Edwards School of Business);
  • Provost’s Award for Excellence in Aboriginal Education: Margaret Kovach (College of Education);
  • Provost's Award for Excellence in International Teaching: Lisa Krol (the University Language Centre);
  • Outstanding Graduate Student Teacher Award: Serene Smyth (College of Kinesiology);
  • Outstanding New Teacher Awards: Angela Bedard-Haughn (College of Agriculture and Bioresources); and Jay Wilson (College of Education).

The winners of the Provost's College Awards for Outstanding Teaching (college specific) are:

  • Ken Van Rees (College of Agriculture and Bioresources);
  • Ken Wilson (College of Arts and Science, sciences);
  • Lorin Elias (College of Arts and Science, social sciences);
  • Edwin Ralph (College of Education);
  • Barbara Phillips (Edwards School of Business);
  • Allan Dolovich (College of Engineering);
  • Len Gusthart (College of Kinesiology);
  • Barbara von Tigerstrom (College of Law);
  • Nigel West (College of Medicine);
  • Sandra Bassendowski (College of Nursing);

Other recent teaching award winners—Master Teachers, USSU Teaching Excellence Awards, 3M National Teaching Fellowships and the Sylvia Wallace Sessional Lecturer Award—were also recognized for the significant contributions they make at the U of S.
