wāskamisiwin

(Plains Cree for "becoming more aware")

About the Series

wāskamisiwin is a professional development series open to faculty and staff across all departments and units at the University of Saskatchewan. The series is a collaborative project between the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching Effectiveness and the Colleges of Nursing, Education, and Medicine.

The goals of the wāskamisiwin series are:

  • to generate increased awareness of the historical roots of contemporary social relations;
  • to foster more positive and respectful relationships among Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples; and
  • to consider the implications that this history has for pedagogies being utilized within academic institutions.

The series will present an overview of the historical relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, Indigenous worldviews, and protocols to guide respectful communication and interaction with Indigenous peoples and communities. Toward the end of the series each year, a panel of Indigenous faculty from the University of Saskatchewan will present on the topic of Indigenous pedagogy.

Each session will close with a facilitated discussion where participants are invited to reflect, share and ask questions.
