Ph.D. (1995) University of British Columbia

Locomotor training can improve recovery after spinal cord injury. Dr. Muir is interested in determining the neural mechanisms underlying this recovery. In particular, she is investigating whether neural pathways which have been spared by a spinal injury will make new neural connections and take over some of the function of the injured pathways. Behavioural and physiological measures of recovery will be correlated with anatomical evidence for new neural connections within the cord. This research could lead to refinement of training regimes designed to improve recovery after spinal cord injury.
