General Information for Reviewers

The Canadian Journal of History/Annales canadiennes d'histoire receives books--both solicited and unsolicited--from many publishers. A list is published once a year, usually in our December issue, of the books which have been received but not reviewed.

If you are interested in reviewing a book for our journal, please fill in our reviewer form. Also, you may visit the "Books Available for Review" section of our website and let us know if there is a book you would be willing and able to review. Typically, we require that our reviewers hold a Ph.D. in history (or equivalent terminal degree in a related discipline). Only under certain circumstances are we able to waive this requirement; contact the editor (cjh@usask.ca) for details.

Because we include a maximum of 60 reviews per issue, at a rate of 3 issues per year, we prefer that reviewers publish no more than one review per year in our journal.

Only under special circumstances will we order books at the request of a specific reviewer or consider unsolicited proposals for review essays. Such requests and proposals should be addressed to the editor. They should describe the book(s) in detail, demonstrate the significance of the book(s) to the field, and explain how the reviewer is qualified to assess the book(s).

We expect that potential reviewers will observe common decency and use common sense where possible conflicts of interest are concerned.

If you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to direct them to the editor. Whether you have reviewed for us before or are joining us for the first time, we look forward to working with you!
