Dr. Butcher is an Associate Member in the Division of Respirology (College of Medicine), the College of Kinesiology, and the Department of Physiology (College of Medicine) and supervises MSc and PhD students through the Health Sciences Graduate Program, as well as through Kinesiology and Physiology.  Dr. Butcher is a consultant for Synergy Strength and Conditioning in Saskatoon.

Dr. Butcher's research interests include:

  • Exercise testing and training methodology - Emphasis on functional effects of high-intensity interval training and clinical anaerobic testing
  • Physiology of exercise and rehabilitation in clinical populations (COPD, asthma, heart failure, other chronic diseases, and aging) and athletes
  • Work of breathing and distribution of muscle oxygenation during exercise
  • Functional muscle physiology and the impact of muscle fatigue and muscular training
  • Pulmonary exercise physiology, clinical pulmonary physiology
  • Pulmonary rehabilitation
