Lab Equipment, Techniques, and Funding

Our lab uses and has expertise with the following equipment/techniques:

  • Metabolic measurement carts (Parvomedics TrueOne, Viasys Vmax) for ventilation, respiratory gas (VO2, VCO2) analysis, and anaerobic and respiratory compensation thresholds.  Both metabolic carts have the capability of measuring inspiratory flow/volume and inspiratory capacities.
  • Powerlab data acquisition system with pressure tranducers and various modules (spirometry, ECG, heart rate variability)
  • Advanced respiratory physiology during exercise (work of breathing using esophageal pressure/Campbell Diagrams, various standalone pneumotachs/spirometers)
  • Complete pulmonary function studies (spirometry, lung volumes/plethysmography, diffusion capacity, max inspiratory/expiratory pressures)
  • Various ergometers (arm and leg cycle ergometers, treadmill) for exercise studies (VO2max/CPET, Wingate tests, submaximal aerobic, steep ramp anaerobic test, high-intensity intervals).
  • Isokinetic dynamometry (Humac NORM) for assessing/training concentric, eccentric, and isometric muscle function
  • Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS; NIRO200) for assessing tissue/muscle oxygenation and deoxygenation.
  • Miscellaneous exercise physiology measurements (blood pressure, heart rate, lactate)
