Expiration of Sophos License & Sophos Removal

For many years, the U of S maintained a subscription agreement for the Sophos Anti-virus software that allowed us to distribute and update this software on university-owned and personally-owned computers for faculty, staff, students, alumni and retirees. This license subscription for Sophos Anti-virus software will expire on June 18, 2014. As a result, you will need to remove the university-provided Sophos from any of your computers that are using it; directions are provided below.

Alternative anti-virus software will be required to help protect you and your computer.

University-owned Computers

University-owned computers have an alternate anti-virus product being provided (SCEP for Windows, SCEP for Mac).

Personally-owned Computers

For personally-owned computers, there are a number of free anti-virus software products that are available for your use.

  • Windows - We recommend the use of the free Microsoft Security Essentials anti-virus software. See the Microsoft Security Essentials webpage for more information and to download the software.
  • Mac - We recommend the use of the free, Sophos-provided Anti-virus software for use on Mac computers. See the Sophos Antivirus for Mac webpage for more information and to download the software. Note: This is different from the version previously provided by the university. You must remove the Sophos anti-virus software that was provided by the university and download a different version directly from the Sophos website.
