Setting a Passcode/word (automatically enables device encryption) - iOS 10 & Higher

Data protection is available for devices that offer hardware encryption, including iPhone 3GS and later, all iPad models, and iPod touch (3rd generation and later). Data protection enhances the built-in hardware encryption by protecting the hardware encryption keys with your passcode. This provides an additional layer of protection for your email messages attachments, and third-party applications.  For more information, see here:

1. Select the “Settings” application on the home screen

2. Select “Touch ID & Passcodes”

3. Select “Turn Passcode On”

Note: You can optionally add Fingerprints by selecting "Add a Fingerpring..." fron this screen, this allows you to unlock your phone by just holding your finger on the Home button.

4. Select “Turn Passcode On” and enter and confirm a passcode of your choice

5. Scroll to the bottom of the Passcode Lock screen turn on “Erase Data” which will cause the device to trigger a wipe after 10 failed attempts to unlock
