Recommended Junk Mail Settings for Hotmail

This is meant for any campus email users who have forwarded their account to a Microsoft Account. Microsoft accounts include, but are not limited to, the following domains: @hotmail.com, @hotmail.ca, @live.com, @live.ca, @msn.com, @passport.com, and @outlook.com.

By default, Hotmail/Outlook.com accounts are set to auto-report email when messages are marked as "Junk" by the user. This creates a complaint about the last sender of the message, and because we forwarded it, we receive the complaint even if the message originated from a different sender. If too many compaints are received against us, we will be blocked by Hotmail.

We advise any users who wish to forward their campus email to disable auto-reporting feature by doing the following:

Change the Auto-reporting Setting:

  1. Log into your Hotmail/Outlook.com account.
  2. Click the Gear icon in top right and select options.

  3. Under "Preventing junk email", please click on the Filters and reporting option.

  4. Under "Report unwanted email to the sender", select Don't tell senders when you don't want their mail option.
