Students

I can't view the lecture recordings for my course, or I'm having problems viewing video content within my course

There's a couple different possible problem you might be experiencing.  The first is that our Academic Video Service does require 3rd Party cookies to be enabled within your browser in order to function with Blackboard.  Here’s an article from their support site about how to enable 3rd Party cookies in various browsers

Obviously, that’s not a great solution if you’re concerned about getting random cookies from advertisers or random sites.  So one of the things you can do in most modern browsers is set Panopto up as an allowed site...

Here is how to do it in Chrome

Instructors

I want my lectures recorded, what do I do?

If your course is a regular credit course in the course calendar, its being taught in a room equipped with lecture recording hardware/software (see this list of rooms for reference) and you are the registered instructor, you can use the Schedule Classroom Recording tool within the Course Tools section of your Blackboard course control panel to schedule recordings for your course.  This video covers how to use the tool, and how you as the course instructor can manage those recordings.

If your course is not a regular credit course, or you're not sure its in an equipped room, or the above process does not work for you, you can:

  1. Provision your Blackboard course into Panopto (view how-to video)
  2. Send an email to academicvideo_support@usask.ca
  3. Tell us what course code, course number, CRN.Term, when the course is running (eg, MWF 8:30-9:20), and where it is running (eg ARTS 202).  Tell us any dates you want omitted from your recording.

We will reply back to you with any questions we might have regarding your room and requirements, and work with you to determine what has to happen to record your lectures.  Please allow at least 3 business days for this process.

How do I manually record my lectures in a classroom?

  1. Provision your Blackboard course into Panopto (view how-to video)
  2. Run the Panopto Personal Recorder that is installed on the Classroom PC (view how-to video)
  3. Ensure that you turn on the microphone in the room.  If you cannot hear yourself in the room, your audio is not being captured.
    1. Check the microphone batteries. Additional batteries are provided in the cupboards of most classroom consoles.  If there are none in the room, call 4263 to let IT Support Services know
    2. Check to ensure the microphone isn’t muted
    3. Check to ensure the volume is turned up in the classroom

How do I make the recordings available to my students?

    1. Add the links to the Panopto Content Folder to your course in Blackboard .  You can either link from your course menu, or you can embed a link to the Panopto Content folder within a content area within Blackboard.  Both options are discussed in our how-to video.(view how-to video)

How do I upload videos to my course (i.e., material that has been previously recorded)?

      1. Go to your Blackboard course and into Tools -> Panopto Content
      2. Click the green Create button and choose Upload Media
      3. Your media must be a video or an audio file, (.m4v, mp4, mp3, .mov, .wmv, .flv), it does not accept Word, PowerPoint, Excel or PDF files.  Here is a detailed list of what formats Panopto will accept:
        https://support.panopto.com/articles/Documentation/5-2-Upload-Support-Matrix
      4. Here’s a how-to video on the process:

How do I embed uploaded or recorded content into my blackboard course?

  1. Use the Panopto Mashup tool within the content editor in Blackboard (view how-to video)
  2. Use the Panopto Video Link tool , found in Tools -> Panopto Video Link

How can I give someone else access to manage or upload videos into my course folder?

For example, an instructional designer wants to edit my videos for me, or the Media Production staff have a new video they want to get to me.  You can use the Share permissions window on your Course folder to give anyone who has an account within our Academic Video Service access to your course folder as a Creator so that they can add new videos or edit existing videos right within your course folder. (View how-to video)
There are quite a number of different settings available to you in the Share settings window, some of which are more dangerous/more revealing than others.  Here’s some best practices information about sharing:

How do I edit recordings in Panopto?

Basic Editing: https://support.panopto.com/articles/Documentation/Basic-Editing
Notes about the basic editor – it allows trimming and cutting, it does not do transitions, titling, or any of those neat things that iMovie or Windows Movie Maker do.  However, it does some other neat things like allowing the embedding of YouTube videos, links to web pages and quizzes.  It also does automatic OCR on PPTs and speech recognition in order to make searching a video better.

How can I copy a recording from one course to another or from My Folder to a course folder?

You can use the Move and Copy tools within the full Panopto interface to move or copy one or many videos from various folders to other folders you have access to within Panopto.  To get to the full Panopto interface when you're accessing your Panopto folder within Blackboard, click the "Open In Panopto" button  in the upper-right of your Panopto content folder window (view how-to-video)

What’s the Panopto Assignment Folder and how does it work?
Overview – The Panopto Assignment tool is not the same as an assignment tool in Blackboard.  It does not create a column in the Blackboard gradebook, it doesn’t do any marking or due dates enforcement or anything like that.   What it does do is provides students with a spot into which they can upload a video for a course, and gives them Creator privileges in that spot.  It also provides them with the ability to download the Panopto application to their Mac or PC so they can use Panopto to produce a recording.  When an instructor initially sets up the Panopto Student Assignment tool, it sets custom permissions so that only the instructor and the submitting student can see a student’s submitted video.  Instructors can choose, using the same Sharing permissions talked about above, to open up a particular video for the entire class to view.
How to set up the Panopto Assignment Tool:

For more support and documentation, you can also check out https://support.panopto.com, they have a fairly extensive documentation set there, but be aware that many of their documents are more general and may not be directly applicable to our Academic Video service

How do I tell if it is recording?

Assuming you have requested scheduled recordings in a room equipped with Remote Recorder software installed on the computer in the room, you should find a little green ribbon near the bottom right of the screen.

Recording icon

A little red dot will appear on it when recording

        starts.

System Tray recording icon

If there is no Panopto ribbon on the screen, then there MAY be a separate machine (Panopto Box) dedicated to recording the lecture.  It has a light that will turn GREEN when it is recording.   If the room you are teaching in is equipped with a recording light, it may be located on the teaching console, or it is sometimes located in the control room at the back of the classroom and visible through the projection window

How do I know if the audio is loud enough to be recorded?

If it is a scheduled recording, make sure you can hear your voice coming through the sound system.  Whatever sound goes through the sound system is captured.  If you cannot hear yourself, make sure the microphone is on, and the room volume is adjusted.

If you are doing a manual recording with the Panopto Personal recorder, you can visually see the level on the main screen.  The green, yellow and blocks will light up as you speak into the microphone.

I tried using a webcam I brought into my classroom with WebEx, WebEx says another program is using the webcam

  1. Panopto Remote Recorder is installed on the computer and it has monopolized the web cam.  Panopto System Administrators can resolve this but they need to know when and where the web cam will be used.

Panopto Folder display has gone all weird

My Panopto Course folder has changed from my nice list of videos with thumbnails and settings I can click on to something that looks like this:

Panopto Window Misconfigured

Answer:  Someone has clicked the Reconfigure button at the bottom left of the Panopto Content folder for your course/folder and added a second folder to your list.

Reconfigure button

I can’t record using the Panopto Personal Recorder installed in a classroom.  It gives me an error when I try to log in.

  1. You may not have an account on Panopto yet.  Log into Blackboard and access the Panopto Course Folder for any course you are  the instructor for.  This will create your Panopto account
  2. If you don’t have a Blackboard course to create your Panopto account

Support Staff

A faculty or staff member has asked to have a meeting or seminar recorded in a room, outside of a regularly scheduled lecture.  What do I do?

  1. Verify what they want recorded?  Audio, audio and computer display, audio, computer display and camera?
  2. Verify that there is Panopto Personal Recorder software installed in the room and that it has the required hardware (Microphone connected to the computer, webcam listed for the room).  If the room is outside of a regular classroom this may mean contacting Sheri Hupe to pull information about the room.  If the computer does NOT have Personal Recorder on it, you will need to submit the machine name to Technical Support Service via Tracks and ask them to install the software.0
  3. Train the client contact on how to run Personal Recorder.
