IP3, "Improved Processes and Parameterisation for Prediction in Cold Regions," is a Canada-wide research network devoted to an improved understanding of surface water and weather systems in cold regions, particularly Canada's Rocky Mountains and western Arctic. IP3 is making contributions to better weather and climate prediction, to estimation of streamflow from ungauged basins, to sustainable management of mountain and northern water resources, to calculating freshwater inputs to the Arctic Ocean, and to predicting changes in Rocky Mountain snow and water supplies. These issues are of key importance to agriculture and urban and industrial development in the Prairies and northwest. IP3 is developing an improved understanding of cold regions hydrometeorology and advancing atmospheric and hydrological predictive models. IP3 scientists conduct field work along a transect of high latitude and high altitude instrumented research sites that characterize the cold regions of Canada. IP3 is a component of the International Polar Year (IPY), the International Decade for Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB), and the Climate and Cryosphere project (CliC) of the World Climate Research Programme. IP3 has been recognized as an Affiliate of the ACQWA (Assessing Climate impacts on the Quantity and quality of WAter) Project in Europe.
IP3's December Newsletter is now available! IP3 in the NEWS: IP3 students Stacey Dumanski and Nicholas Kinar at the University of Saskatchewan have recently been featured in a Saskatoon Star-Phoenix article on field work in Canada's north and a Star-Phoenix article and a Saskatchewan Morning CBC radio show spot on measurement of snow-water equivalent by non-intrusive sonar! Also, IP3 members' work in hydrology and water resources has been featured in an article in Canadian Water Treatment, November/December 2009 and an article in Ottawa Life, October 2009. Presentations and posters from the IP3/WC2N Joint Annual Workshop have been posted on-line!
IP3 Research Basins cover a wide range of elevations and latitudes.
