Sophos Anti-virus is provided free of charge all members of the University community running Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 operating systems. As a result, Sophos is the only anti-virus software supported by the ITS Help Desk.
The latest version of Sophos is 9.5. Older versions of Sophos are no longer supported.
Installation
It is a good idea to check your system for some of the most common threats before you install anti-virus software. If your computer is already infected with a virus, you will not be able to install Sophos as viruses can infect and disable Sophos as it is installing. Microsoft's Windows Live Safety Center is a tool designed to run a full scan on your Windows computer. If your computer is infected, you will need to remove the virus before installing Sophos.
- In order to download Sophos you will need your NSID and password. If you do not know your NSID and password, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
- To install Sophos, you must be logged in as an administrator or in an account with equivalent permissions.
- Click to download and install Sophos Anti-virus.
- Click "Run".
- Click "Run" again.
- Click "Extract" to begin set-up. Note: Windows Vista IS supported.
- Once Installation is complete, the Sophos shield will be displayed on your system tray and Sophos will update itself automatically.
Once installation is complete, you will need to run the Sophos scan. See the Sophos Anti-virus user manual for instructions on how to use Sophos.
