Sophos Anti-virus is provided free of charge all members of the University community running Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 operating systems. As a result, Sophos is the only anti-virus software supported by the ICT Help Desk.
The latest version of Sophos is 10.2. Older versions of Sophos are no longer supported.
Installation
It is a good idea to check your system for some of the most common threats before you install anti-virus software. If your computer is already infected with a virus, you will not be able to install Sophos as viruses can infect and disable Sophos as it is installing. Microsoft's Windows Live Safety Center is a tool designed to run a full scan on your Windows computer. If your computer is infected, you will need to remove the virus before installing Sophos.
- In order to download Sophos you will need your NSID and password. If you do not know your NSID and password, please contact the ICT Help Desk.
- To install Sophos, you must be logged in as an administrator or in an account with equivalent permissions.
- Uninstall any other anti-virus software before installing Sophos.
Step 1: Download the Sophos installer.
Step 2: Click Run.
Step 3: Safely ignore the warning about unverified publisher by following the directions below.
- For Windows 7 and below, click Run:
- For Windows 8, you may see the below warning from Windows SmartScreen:

Step 4: After a couple minutes, you should see an installer window pop up as below:
Step 5: Once Installation is complete, the Sophos shield will be displayed on your system tray and Sophos will update itself automatically.
