Once an application has been developed and is operational, not all activity with the software stops. In many cases, enhancements are required because additional requirements are discovered once the client starts using the software. As well, there are often enhancements to servers, databases and development environments that require retesting of applications.
This application and database maintenance phase of the software development life cycle will continue until the application is no longer meeting the requirements specified at the beginning of the project. Once this occurs, the business analysis and requirements specification phase will begin again, leading to a decision to either retire the application and build or buy a new one or to upgrade the existing system.
