Creating an e-mail alias allows you to personalize your e-mail address by creating an easier-to-remember address for your real e-mail address. Anyone who has an e-mail service on a U of S server can personalize their e-mail address. You cannot register an alias to an off-campus server (e.g. Sasktel, Shaw, Hotmail, etc.) in MITS. Your Network Services ID (NSID) is required to register an alias in MITS.
People commonly use their first and last name as the basis for their e-mail alias. For example, you can register firstname.lastname@usask.ca as an alias for abc123@mail.usask.ca in MITS. All incoming mail going to firstname.lastname@usask.ca will be forwarded to the real address at abc123@mail.usask.ca. Once you have created your alias, you can tell people your e-mail address is firstname.lastname@usask.ca and then they will not have to remember your real e-mail address. Students and alumni are limited to one e-mail alias; employees can create multiple e-mail aliases.
All e-mail aliases must conform to the Computer Use Policy. By completing a MITSregistration you agree to conform to these policies, including the policy to refrain from using University computing facilities in threatening, discriminatory, harassing, or obscene manners.
To create an e-mail alias you will need to:
To modify an existing e-mail alias, in the Current Aliases box make any change(s) and click the Save Changes button.
To delete an existing e-mail alias, click the Delete button below the alias you wish to delete.
You can also connect to MITS to personalize your e-mail address from within PAWS.
- Open the PAWS E-mail Center by clicking the e-mail icon (do not open the PAWS E-mail Center from within the e-mail channel).
- Click the link "E-mail Aliases."
Creating a MITS e-mail alias does not automatically make the alias appear as your outgoing e-mail address (your "from" address). Depending on the server your e-mail services is on, it may be possible to have your outgoing e-mail manually set to indicate your e-mail alias.
Contact the ITS Help Desk for more information. You will need to provide your NSID and registered e-mail alias.
To change your outgoing address in Webmail:
Some e-mail clients such as Mozilla Mail and Microsoft Outlook may allow you to set your outgoing address. The method to set this will vary with each client. Please Note: You must be careful with setting your outgoing address from within your e-mail client. It is possible to specify a "from" address that does not exist. In that case, you could send e-mail to people, but when they try to reply to you, the e-mail will bounce back saying no such person exists. You should always test your e-mail after setting it up by sending e-mail to yourself and then replying to the message.
