This set-up guide will use information for Alpha Charlie as an example. Alpha Charlie has abc123@mail.usask.ca as an e-mail address and has alpha.charlie@usask.ca as an e-mail alias.
Please Note: An e-mail alias (e.g. firstname.lastname@usask.ca) is created in mits.usask.ca and for this guide has been used in the Thunderbird setup. If you have not already created an e-mail alias for your nsid@mail.usask.ca e-mail address, please login to mits.usask.ca to create one.
1. Download the Thunderbird e-mail client. (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/)
2. Install the Thunderbird program by dragging Thunderbird from the mounted disk image to your Applications Folder:

3. Open Mozilla Thunderbird (Running Mozilla Thunderbird for the first time will automatically start the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Wizard.)
As shown below in Figure 2:
4. In the Mail Account Setup screen, fill in your full name in the “Your name:” field as you want your name to appear when you send mail.
5. Fill in the “E-mail address:” field is the address that shows as the “from” address when you send mail. Enter your e-mail alias instead of your NSID address.
6. Enter your account password. Un-check the box “Remember password.” Important note: If this option is checked any person using your computer will have access to your e-mail account.
7. Click on “Continue” button.

8. Click on “Edit” button:

9. The “Username:” should be filled in your NSID (abc123 username). (Figure 4)
10. Click on “Manual Setup” button. (Figure 4)

12. Make sure that “smtp.usask.ca account” is highlighted. (Figure 5)
13. Click on “Edit” button. (Figure 5)

16. The setup should now be complete.
1. Open Mozilla Thunderbird program.
2. Click on the “Tools” pull-down menu. (Figure 1)
3. Select “Accounts Settings.”

4. In the Account Setting windows under account list select “Server Settings.”

5. Please make sure Server Name: “mail.usask.ca” and Port: “143.”
6. User Name: your NSID (abc123).
7. In the “Security Settings” select “STARTTLS” box and “Normal password” box.
As shown in below in Figure 3:
8. In the Account Setting windows under account list select “Outgoing Server (SMTP).”
9. Make sure that the smtp.usask.ca (Default) is highlighted.
10. Click on “Edit” button

11. Please make sure Server Name: “smtp.usask.ca” Port: “587.”
12. In the “Security and Authentication” select “STARTTLS” box and “Normal password” box.
13. Please make sure User Name: your NSID (abc123).
14. Click on “OK” button.

15. The Secure Access setup is now complete.
