This set-up guide for Thunderbird 3.1 will use the name "Alpha Charlie" as the setup guide example. Alpha Charlie has abc123@mail.usask.ca as an email address and alpha.charlie@usask.ca as the e-mail alias.
Please Note: An e-mail alias (e.g. firstname.lastname@usask.ca) is created in mits.usask.ca and for this guide has been used in the Thunderbird setup. Instructions for creating an alias may be found here.
Initial Account Set Up
1. Download the Thunderbird e-mail client. (http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/)
2. Install the Thunderbird program. Double click on "Thunderbird Setup" icon and run the file. (Figure 1)

3. Open Mozilla Thunderbird. (Running Mozilla Thunderbird for the first time will automatically start the Mozilla Thunderbird Setup Wizard.) (Figure 2)

4. In Thunderbird Mail select "Create a new account." (Figure 3)

5. In the Mail Account Setup screen complete the "Your name:" field as it should appear when sending an email.
6. The "Email address:" field appears as the "from" address when sending email. Enter your email alias instead of your NSID address.
7. Enter your account password. Uncheck the box "Remember password."
8. Select the "Continue" button.

9. Select the "Edit button. (Figure 5)

10. The "Username:" should be your NSID (abc123). (Figure 6)
11. Select the "Manual Setup" button. (Figure 6)

12. In the Account Setting windows select the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)". Figure 7)
13. Make sure that the alias - "smtp.usask.ca account" is highlighted. (Figure 7)
14. Select "Edit". (Figure 7)

15. The "Username:" should be filled in with your NSID (abc123 username). (Figure 8)
16. Select "OK".

17. The setup should now be complete.
