When you install Red Hat Enterprise Linux on your system, you should have registered with Red Hat Network (RHN) during the install procedure (see Part 2. Register with Red Hat Network (RHN) for updates if your system is not registered with RHN). This part registers your system with Red Hat Network and modifies the RHN configuration to communicate with the local proxy server (redhat.usask.ca). Once you have been registered, as a local administrator you can install updates/patches with the up2date command:
$ su -
Password:
# up2date
There is a Red Hat Network Alert Notification tool that you can run to check for updates:
Start->System Tools->Red Hat Network Alert Icon
The application places an icon in the task bar showing the current status of the system. There are four possible system status icons.
A white check mark on a blue background indicates that the system is up to date. |
A white exclamation point on a red background indicates that critical updates are available. |
Two white arrows on a green background indicate that the system is checking for updates. |
A white question mark on a gray background indicates that there was a problem with the check up (e.g. network connectivity, RHN server down for maintenance, etc.). |
