Eduroam is a collaborative network that allows members of participating institutions to access wireless services at other participating higher education institutions, without the need for obtaining a guest account. It allows members visiting another Eduroam institution to log in using the same credentials they would at their home institutions.

The Canadian Consortium for Eduroam is currently being established. The Canadian University Council of CIO's (CUCCIO) is the governing body for the Canadian consortium. CUCCIO is currently developing the national policy.

Features

Service Availability

Some network services are not available with the Eduroam wireless service. Each institution determines what access is available and what policies apply at their location. All Eduroam providers must allow basic network connectivity for web browsing (HTTP), secure shell (SSH) and virtual private networking (VPN). There is no guarantee that Eduroam will provide the same access to resources as the home or visited institution's standard wireless networks. The network restrictions placed on Eduroam are at the discretion of the institution providing the local service.

System Access

Connecting to an Eduroam network requires a WPA compatible wireless adapter and an 802.1X supplicant. institution. Many common operating systems, including Windows XP, Windows VISTA, Mac OS 10.4 and Mac OS 10.5, include 802.1X. Learn how to configure your laptop for Eduroam. The EAP type (TTLS, TLS, PEAP, etc.) required by a visiting user will be the same as the user's home

Secure

At a minimum, the Eduroam wireless networks implement WPA/TKIP encryption with 802.1X authentication. Some institutions may offer additional methods such as WPA2/AES or mixed mode operation (WPA and WPA2). ICT recommends the use of WPA2/EAP where that service is available.

Available Across Campus

Wireless Access Points or "hot spots" are available in many locations on campus, providing anytime, anywhere access to the wireless network.

Supported by Home Institutions

If you need support using Eduroam, please contact your home institution. They are in the best position to help with issues. They also have access to national Eduroam technical support resources to resolve issues between institutions. Institutions hosting Eduroam connectivity are not required to provide support to visiting guest users.
