The University Research and Educational Network, commonly called the University Network or the Network, provides communication services for a wide range computers, printers, servers and other devices. It is the underlying service that enables Internet access, e-mail, web applications, printing, electronic commerce, library access and many other services to work.
Services
Wired network connections are provided in virtually all University classrooms, meeting rooms, offices and labs.
For students and others with laptops and other portable devices, wireless network access is also provided in many locations around campus, based on 802.11b and 802.11g network standards.
Eduroam provide wireless reciprocity between participating higher education institutions.
Internet access from home is available in three different forms; there are a few different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Saskatchewan.
Internet access from campus is provided via the Network. There are security restrictions that prevent common virus attacks from reaching campus. Some types of network traffic are rate limited to prevent them from overloading the service and preventing other users from using the Internet.
ICT and the Department of Campus Safety are responsible for network security on campus including responding to complaints of illegal activity.
Access to SRNet, CA*net and International Research Networks is also provided. The 1 gigabit per second service and lightpaths facilitate interactive collaboration and research involving high-speed or large data volumes.
Access to Saskatchewan's CommunityNet is available. This improved communication service will allow better communication and collaboration with the provincial Education and Health communities.
University people in Saskatoon Health Region buildings can also utilize the network service, with slight differences.
Network access, wired and wireless, is also provided at locations away from the main campus, including Royal West Campus, Kernan Farm and others. A variety of connection technologies are used to enable these connections.
