The campus network provides access to the Internet, enabling communication with websites and network services worldwide. Access is provided automatically for people using the wired network and the wireless network.
The U of S currently has 450 Megabits per second of Internet access for the campus. This access is provided using three Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to improve reliability.
To manage consumption of the Internet service and improve the level of service, the Internet traffic is shaped using Packetteer packet shapers. These devices limit the amount of bandwidth that some computers and some applications can use, ensuring there is sufficient capacity for other users of the network. The primary limitations restrict the bandwidth used by ResNet (currently 51 Mbps) and limit the speed of peer-to-peer file sharing.
