Wireless Network - Access the Wireless Network
The U of S wireless network has two wireless network services, an internal network service and a guest network service. The internal network is for employees, students and invited guests. The guest network has been provided so that in addition to students and employees, the wireless network can be used by conference attendees and members of the general public. The login method, computer configuration settings and services available are different for the two wireless network services.
The U of S internal wireless network service is available to students and employees of the University. The internal wireless network connects to the Internet from inside the U of S firewall and becomes part of the internal network. Full access to University network resources is available.
Fully-encrypted Service: uofs-secure (SSID)
This service is a fully encrypted end-to-end wireless solution and should be your first choice when possible.
Before you can access the internal wireless network, identified by the "uofs-secure" SSID, you will need to configure your laptop or device. A wireless set-up guide is available for Windows, Macintosh and Mobile Device operating systems. For assistance joining uofs-secure, please contact the ITS Help Desk.
Once your laptop has been configured, you will be able to access them from the wireless access points on campus.
The U of S internal wireless network service is available to invited guests who have been provided with an individual guest ID specific for their use. The internal wireless network connects to the Internet from inside the U of S firewall and becomes part of the internal network. Full access to University network resources is available.
Employees can grant invited guests individual access to the wireless network from the Wireless Guest Access channel in PAWS. Instructions are available for employees on how to request Individual Guest IDs. Individual guests will be provided with credentials to use to access the wireless network.
Before individual guests can access the internal wireless network, identified by the "guest" SSID, they will need to configure their laptops or devices. Set-up guides are available for the following operating systems:
Individual guests who do not want to configure their systems to meet U of S requirements may use the guest wireless network that connects to the Internet from outside the U of S firewall. Because the connection is outside the firewall, some U of S network resources will not be accessible when connected to the guest wireless service.
Individual guests will need to create a connection to the guest wireless network, identified by the "guest" SSID, in order to use the guest wireless service. Instructions are available for Windows and Macintosh computers. Individual guests can still use their University-provided credentials to connect to the guest wireless network.
Individual guests using their U of S credentials will be able to access the wireless network from the wireless access points on campus. Depending on the operating system used, either a University web login page or a Cisco Clean Access login page will appear when a web browser is first opened.
The U of S guest wireless network service is available to conference attendees who have been provided with a conference ID specific for their use. The guest wireless service connects to the Internet from outside the U of S firewall. Because the connection is outside the firewall, some U of S network resources are not accessible when connected to the guest wireless service.
Employees can request conference IDs that grant conference attendees access to the wireless network using the Wireless Guest Access channel in PAWS. Conference IDs come in two forms, either a single conference ID that can be used by all conference attendees or a separate ID for each attendee. Instructions are available for employees on how to request Conference Guest IDs.
Conference organizers will provide attendees with credentials to use to access the guest wireless network. Conference attendees will need to create a connection to the guest wireless network, identified by the "guest" SSID. Instructions are available for Windows and Macintosh computers.
Please note: In order to appropriately manage service levels for all people using the wireless network, bandwidth and other resources are limited for some groups.
Public access to the U of S wireless network is available using the guest wireless network service. The guest wireless network connects to the Internet from outside the U of S firewall. Because the connection is outside the firewall, some U of S network resources are not accessible when connected to the guest wireless service.
To access the guest wireless network, visitors will need to create a connection to the guest wireless network, identified by the "guest" SSID. Instructions are available for Windows and Macintosh computers.
Please note: In order to appropriately manage service levels for all people using the wireless network, bandwidth and other resources are limited for some groups.
