There are two systems available on campus for training on high performance computing.
The intended purposes for these systems are:
- teaching courses on parallel programming and algorithms;
- teaching courses that require or use software that uses parallel computing;
- teaching courses that use large data sets or parametric spaces;
- training HQP on HPC techniques and applications;
- developing and debugging software to be used on Compute Canada or other large scale HPC facilities
The computer Moneta is named after the Roman goddess of memory (the equivalent of the Greek Mnemosyne). This computer has a significant amount of RAM - 256 GB - shared among 16 processors.
The computer cluster Socrates is named after the Greek philosopher.
ITS cannot provide commercial software licenses - instructors must arrange for those and provide the licenses and media to ITS for installation. ITS will not provide assistance to students for classwork.
ITS Training Services hosts a course on MPI programming using the Socrates cluster.
Contact the HPC consultants with any questions.
Connecting to Socretes and Moneta
These machines are not directly accessible from off-campus. Users that require access from off-campus can login on an accessible campus computer (such as homepage.usask.ca) through SSH, then connect to the HPC training facility via SSH again. It is also possible to connect to these computers using the campus VPN service.
