In summer 2003, the U of S launched a Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) pilot program in the College of Kinesiology and ICT. Prior to launch, ICT selected Cicso VoIP for the pilot based on research done in 2001-2002. An external review was conducted in September 2005. On the basis of that review, a wider deployment of VoIP is underway.
Subsequently, VoIP has been deployed in the Administration and College buildings as well as for a number of phones in other buildings. Additional VoIP technology is being rolled out including call centres, soft phones (Cisco IP Communicator software for phones), 802.11 phones (cordless phones that access the telephone system using the wireless network) and more.
Over the next few years additional VoIP phones will be deployed in more locations on campus as requirements and budgets allow.
