The main campus web server for official webpages for departments, colleges, and other campus organizations is www.usask.ca. It is intended for official University webpages in the same way that homepage.usask.ca is intended for individual webpages.
Any University of Saskatchewan college or department can use www.usask.ca to store webpages. The department head is ultimately responsible for any content on the department's webpage. It is the department head's responsibility to assign a person or people to maintain the webpages for that department. ITS will then create an area for the department to put webpages and accounts for the people who are to maintain the pages.
Campus units eligible for web space may request a virtual domain. If possible, the domain should retain the reference to "usask.ca".
Affiliated organizations may be granted space if they are non-profit, educational or research-based, and if they have a formal relationship with the University of Saskatchewan. A college or department may allocate a portion of its space to an affiliated organization and assume responsibility for this information.
If a department contracts with off-campus individuals to create web spaces, ITS will create separate www accounts for these individuals. Sharing of University of Saskatchewan passwords with anyone, on or off campus, is not allowed.
ITS recommends that departmental webpages are stored on www.usask.ca. Some departments have their own IT staff and maintain their own web servers. ITS cannot guarantee that all features will work for pages not on www.usask.ca.
You can use PHP Scripts on www.usask.ca. See the Apache Server Tools section for more information.
MySQL databases can be supported on www.usask.ca. Contact the central webmasters for more information.
You can use .htaccess files to restrict access to your website. URLs for sites that are restricted to people with NSIDs and passwords need to begin with https:// so that the password is not sent in clear text. For more information on this, please view the Web Page Security course. You can also read the Apache documentation on .htaccess files.
There are currently no disk quotas on the www.usask.ca server. If more than 1GB of space is required, departments should contact the central webmasters so that the proper planning can be done.
While most sites have switched to PHP, Apache Server-Side Includes (SSI) may still be used on www.usask.ca.
Again, most sites have switched to PHP, but custom CGI scripts may still be used on www.usask.ca. CGI scripts are run using the CGIwrap software.
