Re: Alt photo blog
I'll step forward. I'm currently using 421MB of my 330GB quota on my
webserver, so I've got plenty of space for an image archive.
As far as permanence goes, all we really need to worry about is the
address (storage locations can change if need be without affecting
archived links). I'd be willing to create a subdomain of my domain
name to be used for the archive at no extra cost, as I'm not planning
to change it. Alternatively we could register a new domain name, the
only issue being: who's going to pay for it? I don't have a
preference either way, so I'll leave it up to the community to decide.
So now on to presentation. When I initially suggested the blog, I was
envisioning setting up a WordPress (etc.) site where registered users
(i.e. list members) could post images and leave comments. Gord, it
sounds like you're thinking just a place for folks to dump images,
where all discussion stays within the alt list? What does everyone
think about that? Any preferences either way?

There are a few issues.
Sending attachments through the list is not a good idea - for a few
1 - it puts a huge load on the mail server sending out a copy of the
attachment to every subscriber (around 600) Its a terribly
inefficient way of
distributing an image.
2 - It assumes everyone on the list want ato get the attachment. It
very inconvenient for a few people to deal with attachments
3 - it is a security risk to end users -
4- permanence - the list is archived - frequently people refer to a
in the past - if it includes a reference to an image - it would be
that image to be available as long as the archives are available.
With these issues in mind I think the best approach would be to set
image archive that allowed list members to post images. These
images can be
referred to (linked to) in postings. People then would have the
whether or not they wish to download a copy of the image.
The archive would hopefully be relatively permanent.
I will see if I can setup something tied to the list archive that
long term storage of images.
I don't think this is within the our University's mandate. If
anyone else has
the ability to set up a relatively long term accessable image
feel free to step forward.

You know, it would only take about 5 minutes for me to set up a blog

to maintain it if there's enough interest for it.

Although many of the list members have websites of their own, it
might be nice to have a site where everyone could post and see each
others work, don't you think? Especially if we had a person to
maintain it ;)

Subject: Re: gum question - posting images
Hi all -
Sam corrected Diana about attaching images -- and someone else
wished for a site for posting images (sorry, can't remember who).
I am a web designer and have hosting facilities -- I would be
happy to supply such a place for this group (it's something I
myself would love to have so I could see! Umm - pictures are (at
least here) worth a thousand words!
As long as we keep it simple I'll keep it up and maintain it.
And, to that end, here are some basic rules to start with --
flexible in the future depending on what happens):
1. All files jpg
2. 700k or less (I'm in the boonies and don't have broadband)
3. limit 3/month per list participant (if I get inundated this
will have to change)
No design whatsoever (in keeping with the "style" of this list).
And, this is not an offer that will provide a "website" for your
images. It is simply a bulletin board FOR THIS LIST ONLY.
Just a simple index page with links to images
(artist process filename)
When you post a link in the list, it will be to your image, like
http:// www dot domainname dot org / filename dot jpg
And, if this goes ahead, and when we have a collection, I will
organize them according to process.
I will close the site to robots and spiders and have no SEO in
it. You can tell me if you want right-click disabled or not (as
group)--NO=right-click is enabled and you can "steal" the images,
YES=right-click is disabled (this protects against theft from
only the dumbest thieves == but there are a lot of those!)
Okay - that's it -- now standing by for feedback!
FYI - this is a legit offer -- I'm legit -- see below:
