Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation – Henry Friesen Award Nomination Due January 28, 2011 About the CSCI Award The Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation offers several awards each year, including: the Henry Friesen Award for a Canadian scientist (MD or PhD) who is notable for her/his contribution to biomedical or related research and who is actively involved in research at a Canadian university; Value: The award consists of $10,000, monies to cover travel and hotel expenses to the RCPSC/CSCI annual meeting and an honorary membership in the CSCI. |

Konrad Adenauer Research Award (Germany) Nominations Due: January 31, 2011 About the Konrad Adenauer Research Award Established through the generosity of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, this award is made to highly qualified Canadian scholars whose research work in the humanities or in the social sciences has earned international recognition and who are among the group of leading scholars in their respective area of specialization. The aim of the award is to promote academic relations between Canada and the Federal Republic of Germany, and it is presented to honour lifetime academic achievement. The recipient is invited to carry out a research project of his/her choice in Germany, in cooperation with German colleagues specializing in the same areas, for a period of up to one year. Value: Up to EUR 75,000. The Humboldt Foundation will pay the return travel costs between Canada and Germany (once only) for award winners and family members (provided the latter stay with them in Germany for at least three months). |

SSHRC Gold Medal Nominations Due: February 1, 2011 About the SSHRC Gold Medal The SSHRC Gold Medal for Achievement in Research is SSHRC’s highest research honour. It is awarded to an individual whose leadership, dedication, and originality of thought have significantly advanced understanding in his or her field of research, enriched Canadian society, and contributed to the country's cultural and intellectual life. Value: The winner receives the Gold Medal and $100,000. The funds can only be used for research, training or other academic activities. |

Welch Award in Chemistry is intended to foster and encourage basic chemical research contributions for the benefit of mankind as set forth in the will of Robert Alonzo Welch, founder of The Welch Foundation. Lasker Medical Research Awards Nomination Due: February 1, 2011 About Lasker Medical Research Awards
In creating the Lasker Awards for Basic and Clinical Medical Research and Public Service, Albert and Mary Woodard Lasker sought to raise public awareness of the value of biomedical research to a healthy society. The Lasker Awards focus attention on the community of remarkable basic and clinical scientists whose work has been seminal to understanding disease and the human being's capacity to overcome it. Since 1962, 71 Lasker Award recipients have gone on to win a Nobel Prize, most within two years of receiving the Lasker Award. Value: $US100,000 honorarium plus citation and statuette. |

American Society of Animal Science Awards Nominations Due February 25, 2011 About the ASAS Award The American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) presents a variety of awards each year to recognize achievements in such areas as research in animal physiology and endocrinology, ruminant nutrition, non-ruminant nutrition, and animal breeding and genetics, as well as in teaching and other related areas. Canadian Academy of Health Sciences Fellowships Nomination Due March 25, 2011 About the CAHS Fellowship Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) fellowships recognize individuals of great accomplishment and achievement in the academic health sciences in Canada. CAHS works in partnership with the Royal Society of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering to form the three Member Academies of the Council of Canadian Academies. Fellows elected to the Academy will be well recognized by their peers nationally and internationally for their contributions to the promotion of health science. NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal Nomination Due: April 1, 2011 About the Gerhard Herzberg Gold Medal The NSERC Herzberg Medal is the highest honour of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council. It is awarded annually to an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence and influence in research, for a body of work conducted in Canada that has substantially advanced the natural sciences or engineering fields. Value: In addition to the medal, the winner is guaranteed $1 million to use for his or her own university-based research or to direct in some related way such as the establishment of research scholarships, fellowships or chairs in his or her name in Canadian universities. Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Titular Fellowships Nomination Due: April 30, 2011 About the ACT Titular Fellowships Nominations are traditionally due in late April. Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Titular Fellowships are intended to enable the universities of the Commonwealth to develop the human resources of their institutions and countries through the interchange of people, knowledge, skills and technologies. They are offered in subject areas or fields of activity in which the needs of developing countries are particularly great Value: Up to $5,000 according to the actual program. NSERC Synergy Award Nomination Due: May 3, 2011 About the NSERC Synergy Award Nominations are traditionally due in early May. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. The Synergy Awards for Innovation "celebrate outstanding university-industry R & D partnerships." Administered by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), they are intended to recognize and reward innovation and superior collaborative research in the natural sciences and engineering. Value: $200,000 research grant to the university; sculpture and NSERC Industrial R&D Fellow to the industry partner (NSERC will bear the cost of the industrial portion of the fellow’s salary). |

Killam Research Fellowships Nominations Due: May 15, 2011 About the Killam Research Fellowship Nominations are traditionally due in mid May. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. Killam Research Fellowships are funded through lifetime and testamentary gifts to the Canada Council from Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam. They provide support to scholars of exceptional ability who are engaged in research projects of broad significance and widespread interest. The awards honour the memory and exceptional achievements of Mrs. Killam’s husband, Izaak Walton Killam. Value: Killam Research Fellowships provide two years of release time from teaching and administrative duties. They are valued at $70,000 per year. The fellowships are awarded to individuals, but the funds are paid to and administered by the institution to fund replacement costs for the fellow. Institutions are required to pay the fellow’s full salary and benefits for the two-year period. |

NSERC E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships Nomination Due: June 7, 2011 About the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowships Nominations are traditionally due in early June. The call for nominations has not yet been issued and this date may be subject to change. NSERC Steacie Fellowships are awarded to enhance the career development of outstanding and highly promising scientists and engineers who are Canadian university faculty members, and are earning a strong international reputation for original research. Every year, NSERC awards up to six Steacie Fellowships for a two-year period. Value: Successful Fellows are relieved of teaching and administrative duties so that they can devote all their time and energy to research. Fellowships are held at a Canadian university or affiliated research institution. They normally include a contribution to the university in the amount of $90,000 per year toward the Fellow's salary and a $250,000 research grant. See website for details and restrictions.
