videoconference seminar on Fostering Entrepreneurialism in the Research
Environment, sponsored in part by the U of S and U of R Industry Liaison
Offices, will be held Thursday, May 6th in conjunction with
Saskatchewan
Opportunities Week. Faculty, graduate students and researchers are invited
to attend the videoconference. This breakfast seminar will address a variety
questions and concerns related to taking great ideas or technologies to
market. An expert panel of academic and industrial speakers will relay
their experiences, challenges and lessons learned in taking ideas from the bench

Please join us for an information session to find out the steps to
success as an expert panel
discusses their experiences, challenges, and the lessons learned.
Speakers include:
Paul Guild,
Vice-President
of University Research, University of Waterloo
Dr. Guild has played an extensive role in developing
industry-research partnerships in
Canada’s best-known Technology Triangle that includes the
communities of Waterloo,
Kitchener and Cambridge, Ontario. This dynamic cluster has grown
to the point where it
exports $10 billion in products and services annually and is home
to major technology
companies such as Research in Motion (RIM). His 20-minute
presentation will tell the story
behind the Technology Triangle’s growth and describe the
interrelationships between
universities, researchers and the private
sector.
Ron Palmer,
President,
Accutrak Systems Ltd.
Dr. Palmer is the founder of Accutrak Systems Ltd., a privately
owned corporation based in
Regina, whose roots emanated from the University of Regina. For
the past several years, Dr.
Palmer had focused his research and development efforts on vehicle
guidance for the
agriculture industry. After developing patented precision guidance
systems several years ago,
Dr. Palmer then applied this experience to develop automatic
steering systems for various
styles of tractors. He has integrated his auto-steering technology
with the increasingly
available array of GPS-based receivers and steering guides,
resulting in new generation of
products.
George Khachatourians, President, Khachatourians Enterprises
Inc.
Dr. Khachatourians was a co-founder of Philom Bios in 1980 and
Biolin Inc. (1994) and is
currently president and founder of the biotechnology firm,
Khachatourians Enterprises Inc. He
has been a Professor of Microbiology in the Colleges of Medicine
and Agriculture, University of
Saskatchewan since 1974. He is the founder and coordinator of
Center for Molecular
Agriculture and Applied Biotechnology, and is currently Head,
Department of Applied
Microbiology and Food Science, College of Agriculture at the
University of Saskatchewan.
While Dr. Khachatourians is an internationally recognized and
prolific biological scientist whose
research programs' scholarly contributions have included: two
patented vaccines; over 500
scientific and technical reports and publications; 58 book and
encyclopaedia chapters and
reviews and eight books. He has extensive experience with business
and industry, including
participation on a variety of corporate board of directors
including Philom Bios and Mycogen, a
leading agri-business and biotechnology giant headquartered in San
Diego, California.
Jack Peterson,
President,
e-Stage Capital Inc.
Dr. Peterson runs the University of Manitoba business incubator,
Incubat, in conjunction with
Dr. Albert Friesen of Genesys Venture Corporation. Incubat is
located within the University of
Manitoba’s research and technology park and is dedicated to
development of information and
communications technology companies and biotechnology start-up
companies. Dr. Peterson
speaks frequently on the requirements of funding seed companies
and is one of the founding
members of the Manitoba Angel Investors Network. He has also been
actively involved in the
establishment and delivery of an Investment Accelerator Program
with Industry Canada.
