Residential schools –
and their abuses – may be a thing of the past, but for indigenous people, the
memories still reverberate in an education system that continues to fail
them.
Transformation, says
Marie Battiste, starts with understanding how the current system reflects the
past. But academic research, she believes, should go beyond explaining this
history and its effects. Rather, researchers must identify strategies for
helping indigenous people recover and rebuild.
Dr. Marie Battiste, a
professor in the College of Education, is a Mi’kmaq educator and
graduate of both Stanford and Harvard universities. A technical expert to the
United Nations, she has published widely and presented internationally on
indigenous knowledge and education.
