The European Council has given its backing to the proposed structure for Horizon 2020 and increased the proposed budget from €80 Billion to €90 Billion. Horizon 2020 will be the eighth European Framework Programme for Research and Technological
Development and will run from January 2014 to December 2020.
Horizon 2020 will be structured around three pillars:
· Excellent Science will include:
o The main elements of the current PEOPLE specific programme (otherwise known as Marie Curie Actions)
o Support for frontier research currently under the IDEAS specific programme
o Support for research infrastructure (CAPACITIES specific programme)
o Support for emerging technologies
· Societal Challenges will include support for multi-national collaborations, similar to the FP7 COOPERATION specific programme, focused on:
o Health, demographic change and wellbeing;
o Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research, and the bio-economy;
o Secure, clean and efficient energy;
o Smart, green and integrated transport;
o Inclusive, innovative and secure societies;
o Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials
· Industrial Leadership will focus on innovation in all fields
For more information on Horizon 2020, please see the CORDIS website at

Calls in the COOPERATION specific programme will be published by the European Commission in July 2012.
COOPERATION projects are multi-national, collaborative research projects involving a minimum of three partners in three different EU countries. Canadians are eligible to participate in all COOPERATION projects. Calls will be in the
following Thematic Areas:

Some of the calls may be targeted specifically to include Canadian researchers. Watch for these on the ERA-Can website in late July.
-
Marie Curie International Fellowships: Calls will close August 16, 2012.
· International Incoming Fellowships allow Canadians researchers to work at a European institution for 1-2 years.
· International Outgoing Fellowships allow a Canadian research institution to host a fully-funded postdoctoral researcher for 1-2 years.
All Canadians completing applications for the Marie Curie Actions can call on ERA-Can as a resource for advice and assistance.

Canadians in FP7:
Cell Phone Safety: The FP7 MOBI-KIDS Project
The recent increase in cell phone use by teenagers, young adults and children has generated growing concern about the possible connection between radio frequency (RF) fields and cancerous brain tumours. Assessing the nature and seriousness of these dangers
was the main objective of the FP7 MOBI-KIDS project that included two Canadian researchers, Dr. Daniel Krewski and Dr. Daniel Bédard, at the University of Ottawa’s R. Samuel McLaughlin Centre for Population Health Risk Assessment.
