Research Committee:

The current Research Director, and Chair of the Research Committee, is Dr. Dave Leswick.

Follow this link for a discussion of the role of the Research Director.

Who are we?  A group of 8 radiologists, researchers and administrators.

Current members:
David Leswick (Research Director)
Grant Stoneham (Academic Head of Medical Imaging)
Sheldon Wiebe (Unified Department Head)
Derek Fladeland (Residency Program Director)
Dean Chapman (Light source – AKA Synchrotron)
Corey Miller (Medical Imaging Manager)

How often does the committee meet?  The committee has formal meetings 3 - 4 times per year.  Between meetings communication is via e-mail and hallway conversations.

What does the committee do?  The committee has an evolving role.  The main goal is to foster quality medial imaging research in Saskatoon for both residents and staff radiologists.  We are currently working to increase collaborative efforts, funding and overall productivity.  One of the routine functions is the review and approval of applications for the Continuing Research Funds account.

How can I join?  We are actively looking for at least two new members.  One community based radiologist from Saskatoon and one from Regina.  If anyone is interested, please e-mail Dave Leswick.

Continuing Research Funds Account and Grants:

  • What is the goal?  To provide limited funds for department member’s research that is not able to be funded through other means.
  • Where did this money come from?  The fund was initially endowed by a seed donation of $15,000 from the clinical earnings of the University Medical Imaging Consultants (AKA University Based Radiologists (UMIC)).  An annual call for funding will me made at the start of the academic year.  Sponsors will be appropriately recognized on this department web site.
  • Who is eligible to apply?  The fund is open for applications form all members of the Unified Department of Medical Imaging.  Members may apply for up to $2,000 of funding per academic year.
  • What are the funding priorities?  Projects not funded through other means.  Specific examples include:

    • Projects where the total expected costs would be less than is typically applied for from other external funding sources.
    • Projects in development where a small amount of start-up funds are required for either a pilot project or technique optimization before application for external funds can be made.
    • Research opportunities whose time-line does not permit application to an external funding source.

  • How can I learn more?  Interested applicants can e-mail Dave Leswick for a copy of the fund overview and application process.
  • How do I apply?  Review the fund overview and submit an application via e-mail.  The committee response time is generally excellent with most applications reviewed and a decision made within 48-72 hours.
  • What has been sponsored to date?  Since July, 2006 a total of three applications have been approved as follows:

    • Saskatchewan CT Dose Survey: a survey of CT doses in all sites across the province for a two week period in the summer of 2006.  $122 for mailing and supplies.  Chief investigators: Nida Syed, Derek Fladeland and David Leswick
    • Multimodality Imaging of Traumatic Growth Plate Imaging in a Rat Model:  an investigation of Synchrotron vs MRI imaging.  $1,145 for travel to  Brookhaven New York and after-hours MRI scanning.  Chief investigators: Robert Wilson, Lauren Allen, Dean Chapman and Dave Leswick
    • Rapid X-ray fluorescence mapping in the brain - correlation with SWI: correlating synchrotron rapid x-ray fluorescence of metals and SWI imaging in the brain.  Approved for up to $330 for after-hours MRI scanning.  Chief Investigator: Sheri Harder

Research Project & Case Bank:

  • What is the goal?  To build a centralized list of research project ideas, critical questions and interesting cases.  This bank will then available to residents and interested medical students who are looking for new research projects or case reports for publication.  The bank will also be available to district staff radiologists who are looking to collaborate on research projects.
  • What can be submitted?  We’re looking for typical research projects, case reports for publication (either traditional or educational such as CARJ resident’s corner) or cases for AFIP.
  • How is this structured?  Potential researchers may submit to the bank via e-mail.  If someone submits an idea, it is expected that they be willing to collaborate on the project with residents/other co-investigators.  Any person who selects a project from the bank will be required to work with the submitting individual.  This will prevent any potential excluding of original investigators - AKA “idea stealing”.   Submitting a project or case does not obligate the submitting individual to work with whoever may contact them.  If someone feels that the contacting person is not appropriate for the project or that they do not wish to work with them, they can politely decline the offer of collaboration.
  • Who has access to the bank?  Anyone looking for a project or case report that is willing to work with those who have submitted cases.
  • How can I contribute to the bank?  Email the Research Director.
  • Has there been any success yet?  So far there have been 8 projects submitted.  1 project has been selected and is currently in progress.
