FALL SEMESTER
IS THE PULPIT GENDERED?
Rev. Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg
Professor of Pastoral Studies, St. Andrew's College

Dr. Kim-Cragg will explore the question of whether the pulpit is gendered as she shares her own experience of preaching in church. Her subjective experience is used to examine the pulpit as a liturgical space and symbol that has been constructed to serve the masculine body and that continues to perpetuate patriarchal and hierarchical church traditions. The presenter will also attempt to shed light upon feminist response and resistance to such traditions as she draws postcolonial insights on the experience of standing on the pulpit as “out of place.” You are invited to this conversation where the boundaries between holy and unholy are boldly transgressed.
