Music Theatre at its best!

The Music Theatre Ensemble is an auditioned group of 8-14 members. We are dedicated to providing instruction and on-stage performing experience for singers in the genres of Opera, Operetta, and Broadway styles. Enrolment is kept low to insure that each participant is assured opportunities to perform as both soloist and ensemble partner each semester. Largely, our work is done in excerpted scenes from full-sized works. However, we do manage a full-scale work when the forces are right.

We generally will present at least two different shows each year. One show is taken from opera or operetta works, and the other show of Broadway-style works. We often have (and encourage) participants from all facets of the university interested in staged singing. Occasionally we benefit from a visit by guests in the field who will host master classes or discussions about singing and the stage career. In recent years, we have adopted a partnership with The Opera Troupe of Saskatoon by which our members are invited to participate in productions with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra.

Auditions are held each fall at the beginning of classes. Required works include one piece in English and one in another language (preferably Italian, French, or German – exceptions upon request). One work should be from the opera or operetta genre, and the other from Broadway or Music Hall repertoire. You will also be asked t participate in a ‘cold reading’ from a dramatic work. Check with Dr. Gable for details at i.sing@usask.ca, or in-person in Room 1102 EDUC.
