Prior to the modern form of the federal Indian Act, a number of statutes relating to Indians were enacted by the pre-confederation colonial legislatures. This volume is a compilation of selected statutes directly affecting Indians that were enacted between 1777 and 1867. In addition to the Canadian statutes selected, two Imperial statutes are also included because they are particularly relevant in that they explicitly extend the colonial governments' criminal jurisdiction regarding crimes and offences to the Indian territory.
