What's in your toolbox?

CINECgraphic

Many nurses are hired into clinical instructor or nurse educator roles without the benefit of foundational education instruction and are expected to hit the ground running.  Additional education is needed to support the transition from expert clinical nurse to novice nurse educator.

The Clinical Instructor Nurse Educator course is intended to give new nurse educators a toolbox of knowledge, skills and abilities.  This will assist the nurse educator to operationalize learning objectives into meaningful scenarios for learners and follow up with the appropriate evaluation.  This knowledge and ability will be adaptable to clinical situations, simulation and laboratory settings and into the practice area of the clinical nurse educator.  Participants will be able to use these techniques to engage, evaluate and be effective in the educator role.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of foundational educational practices
  2. Develop tools to coordinate effective clinical, lab or classroom experiences
  3. Choose appropriate assessment and evaluation techniques for a variety of settings
  4. Build a network to enhance professional support in the educator role

Teaching methods include:

  1. Case studies
  2. Discussion board debate
  3. Practical application to what you are teaching now
  4. Reflective questioning
  5. Discussions with course instructor

This course is delivered using Blackboard Learning Management System and awards a certificate of completion. No prior prerequisites are required. The time comment will be approximately 3 - 5 hours per week.
At this time the Clinical Instructor Nurse Educator course is limited to Saskatchewan Registered Nurses. Future courses will be open to out of province participants.
