Background

  • NAPN was established in 1985.
  • Funded by MSB (Medical Services Branch) & IIHCP (Indian and Inuit Health Careers Program) Saskatchewan.
  • NAPN had 196 students come through the spring orientation program from 1985 to 1997.
  • This program evolved to a support and retention service for the Nursing Education Program of SK (NEPS) in 1998
  • Funded by FNIHB (First Nations and Inuit Health Branch) as well as SIAST Nursing Division, the U of S College of Nursing, and SKLearning

Mission Statements

  • Promote Success and Excellence for Aboriginal Nursing and Medical students
  • Facilitate recruitment and retention of Aboriginal Nursing and Medical students
  • Offer Referrals to other Health Careers as appropriate.

Long Term Vision

Increasing Aboriginal Peoples in the healing careers. Working towards balanced, healthy, Aboriginal communities.

Statistics

  • As of 2007/08, there are currently 120+ Aboriginal Nursing Students in NEPS (Regina & Saskatoon) 14 Aboriginal Medical Students.
  • NEPS has 29 seats in Saskatoon and 28 seats in Regina set aside for Aboriginal students.
