Grammarly - Writing Skills Tool

Grammarly is an automated proofreader. Once it reviews your work, it not only identifies where improvements are needed but provides feedback about how to fix the mistakes. It could improve your marks and your writing ability.

The College of Nursing is conducting a pilot project to investigate if Grammarly supports students’ learning. Please join us in this pilot project by telling us what you think about this product. You can send feeback to nursing.elearning@usask.ca. The following directions will help you get started:

Setting up a Grammarly Account

To set up an account within Grammarly, go to http://www.grammarly.com/edu. Accounts are free for U of S Nursing students.

  1. Click Sign Up at the top of the page on http://www.grammarly.com/edu/
  2. Enter your name
  3. Enter your email address, it must be your U of S email address in the form of abc123@campus.usask.ca or abc123@mail.usask.ca (Email aliases are not valid at this time. For example, john.smith@usask.ca).
  4. Enter a password of your choice and click Continue.
  5. An activation email will be sent to your inbox. Click the link in the email to confirm registration.

There are two methods you can use to access Grammarly, 1) http://www.grammarly.com/edu/ and 2) downloading a Microsoft plug in.

Method 1

You can now login to your account on the Grammarly website to access the online interface. Grammarly will review your work for grammar mistakes and/or plagiarism. It is as easy as copying your work into the tool or uploading the document from your computer. You must also select the genre your work represents.

Once Grammarly has checked your work, you will receive feedback. The following graphic is an example of feedback Grammarly provided.

By using the feedback, you receive from Grammarly your writing skills will improve. If you have any questions about the feedback, there is an online community to help you.

Method 2

Using the Microsoft Plugin for Microsoft Office is the second method to use Grammarly.

Go to this site: http://www.grammarly.com/office-plugin/, download and install the plugin.

When the set-up is complete, Grammarly will appear in your tool bar. Click on this Grammarly button in your tool bar whenever you would like your work checked for grammar and plagiarism.
