Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan (NEPS)
Overview
Saskatchewan people have high respect for the knowledge and skills of nurses. Nursing skills are portable and can be used in a variety of direct care, education, administration, and research areas. A sound educational base allows nurses to practice nationally and internationally. Specialization opportunities are readily available as nurses practice in diverse contexts. Nurses are currently exploring new initiatives in private and inter-disciplinary practice settings.
In the past decade there has been a decrease in available seats for nursing education and an increase in the average age of practising nurses. These trends should ensure future job opportunities.
The Nursing Education Program of Saskatchewan is designed to prepare graduates with the knowledge, skills, abilities, values, and attitudes necessary for professional nursing practice in a variety of health care settings within a changing health system.
Nurses with further education or specialization and experience, practice in a variety of areas, for example:
- northern outpost nursing
- neo-natal intensive care nursing
- counseling
- health education
- school programs
- hospice care
- rural wellness centre nursing
- home care
- research
- administration
- occupational health
- complementary therapies
- independent practice
