Christine began her Master's of Science in Nutrition program under the supervision of Dr. Hassan Vatanparast in September of 2009. She quickly became a great asset to Our College and to her field. This past month Christine successfully defended her Master’s thesis entitled, “Have we forgotten the children? A study of health and nutrition issues in immigrant and refugee newcomer children”. Nutrition Candidate, who has been awarded research funds through the Prairie Metropolis Centre for her project entitled, “Insight into the Food Culture Issues Surrounding Karen and Burmese Refugees in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan”. Adrienne Danyliw is a Master’s of Science Candidate in Nutrition, studying under the supervision of Dr. Susan Whiting and Dr. Hassan Vatanparast.
Adrienne was presented with three awards at the Canadian Nutrition Society/Société canadienne de nutrition (CNS/SCN) Annual Meeting in Edmonton held June 3-5, 2010. She was one of eight finalists presenting in the Nestle Nutrition Graduate Student Competition and as such was awarded the Christine Gagnong Memorial Travel Award. Adrienne was also awarded the Nestle Graduate Student Award for recognition of excellence in the quality of graduate student research conducted in the field of Nutritional Sciences. Adrienne received 3rd Place for her research on Beverage Intake by Canadian Children and its Relationship to Body Mass Index.

Lindsay Tumback recently received her M.Sc. Degree in Nutrition studying under the supervision of Dr. Gord Zello. Lindsay has received a Canadian Obesity Network Travel Award to attend the 5th Annual Obesity Summer Boot Camp.
The boot camp is held in Quebec and will cover all aspects of obesity, ranging from epidemiology and public health to cell biology, energy regulation, clinical management and health policy.

Along with her supervisor Dr. Whiting, M.Sc. Nutrition student Megan Koo has been awarded $30,000 through the MITACS Accelerate Internship Program. MITACS and partner organization Dietitians of Canada are each providing $15,000 for her project titled “Development of a Web-based Resource for Consumers of Vitamin/Mineral Supplements”.

At the recent endMS Conference in Saskatoon. Jotham Gan received first place for his poster titled QkI-5 expression alters CG4 oligodendroglial cell morphology, and LaRhonda Sobchishin received second place for her poster Development of a new cerebral hemispheral organ culture method for newborn mouse brain. Jotham is a master’s candidate, studying under the supervision of Dr. Adil Nazarali, and LaRhonda is a research technician with Dr. Nazarali’s lab. Fantastic work Jotham & LaRhonda!

Jennifer Wright is a Master’s of Science student in Nutrition studying under the supervision of Dr. Gord Zello. Jennifer has been awarded funds from the Global Partners Fund for her application to the University Small-Grant Program of Research Exchanges for her project entitled “Collaboration of Nutrition Graduate Students Through Research for Improved Health in Ethiopia”.

Erica (Bingbing) Ling is currently a Ph.D. candidate in the division of Pharmacy working under the supervision of Dr. Jane Alcorn, DVM, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Pharmacy. Erica was one of this year’s four SHRF Top Researcher Award winners from the University of Saskatchewan. Erica was presented with the Top Postdoctoral Fellowship Award (Biomedical) for research excellence at the Santé! Awards Dinner held last night.
Erica began her Ph.D. program in January 2006. She is currently working on her thesis, entitled “Drug/Inflammation Nutrient Transport Interaction in the Lactating Mother-Neonate Dyad”, with plans to complete her Ph.D. in the spring of 2010. Erica is an outstanding candidate, and has been awarded numerous scholarships and awards for her accomplishments. Erica was also just recently awarded the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship for 2009-10 for her project, “How does D-lactate cause neurological dysfunction in metabolic acidosis?”, under the supervision of Dr. Gord Zello, Division of Nutrition & Dietetics.
