Alumni Award of Achievement

This prestigious award is presented in recognition of outstanding contribution to profession, community and/or the University of Saskatchewan.

Dr. Glen Baker, BSP'70, MSc’72, PhD’74, DSc’00 

Dr. Glen Baker is an exceptional scientist, with a national and international reputation in biological psychiatry and neuropsychopharmacology. His most significant contributions have been made in the areas of involvement of amines and amino acids in the etiology and pharmacotherapy of psychiatric disorders and in drug metabolism. He has also been active in drug development and is a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Neurochemistry and Drug Development.

To date, two patents have resulted from his work. With a substantial publication record which includes more than 250 articles, as well as numerous abstracts and book chapters.

Dr. Baker is not only an exceptional researcher, but a dedicated educator. He has supervised 33 graduate students, 18 post-doctoral fellows, and 25 summer students, and has also served on numerous supervisory committees for graduate students other than his own.

From 2000 to 2005, he was the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Alberta, during which time he was the only nonpsychiatrist to hold such a position in Canada . Currently the Director of the Neurochemical Research Unit, a well-known multidisciplinary research unit at the University of Alberta which he co-founded in 1979, Dr. Baker continues to be active on numerous panels and scientific advisory boards. He has held McCalla and Killam Professorships and continues to have an enormous influence on the scientific community nationally and internationally.
