I started my research in the field of fish neurobiology, and later became interested in studying the stoichiometry of GABAA receptors and the alteration in GABAA receptor subunits during processes of tolerance to benzodiazepine treatment. I also studied alterations in GABAergic systems in animal models of Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. Thereafter, in collaboration with Dr. Erminio Costa (University of Illinois at Chicago) I studied reelin deficits in schizophrenia and the epigenetic mechanisms related to those deficits. Lately, in collaboration with Dr. Lisa Kalynchuk (University of Saskatchewan) I am studying the neurobiology of animal models of depression. A few years ago, I started a new research line devoted to the discovery of novel biomarkers of mental disorders.

My professional activities at the University of Saskatchewan include building academic and research bridges between the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition and the College of Medicine, as well as to develop collaborations with scientists at the UofS (and other national and international institutions) devoted to the discovery of novel biomarkers and novel drug targets of mental disorders.
