University of Saskatchewan Open It was a day of upsets at the 2004 University of Saskatchewan Open Cross Country Meet. On the men's side, the University of Calgary, previously unranked nationally, won the meet with 39 points, ahead of the #9 ranked University of Alberta (79 points), the Queen City Striders (a club team from Regina - 80 points), and the #3 ranked University of Manitoba (82 points). In fifth place were the University of Regina (110 points) and in sixth were the hosts, the University of Saskatchewan (114 points). In Cross Country, the lowest score wins. On the women's side, the #7 ranked University of Manitoba upset the defending national champions and #3 ranked University of Calgary, 34 points to 39 points. In third place were the Regina Harriers Blue Team (88 points) followed by the University of Saskatchewan (107 points) and the University of Alberta (114 points). In sixth place were the University of Regina (143 points) and in seventh were the Regina Harriers Black Team (201 points). Sept 25, 2004: A HUSKIES versus Cougars Dual The 40th Annual University of Saskatchewan Sled Dog Cross Country Meet turned into a tight dual between your HUSKIES and the University of Regina Cougars. On the men's side, the HUSKIES fielded two teams, keeping them balanced (spreading the top runners between the two teams) while the Cougars ran all their runners on one team. Even so, the HUSKIES came out on top, with the lowest point total of 23 points, versus the Cougars' 24 points. The second HUSKIES team finish third, with 31 points. If the HUSKIES would have ran their best team, they would have won with 18 points. The HUSKIES top performers in the 8km race were Matt Scobie (5th - 26:06), Jason Kindrat (7th - 26:28), Iain McCormick (8th - 26:29), and Jeff Rhinas (9th -26:31). On the women's side, both the HUSKIES and Cougars ran two teams. The HUSKIES teams finished 2nd and 3rd, with the Cougars taking 1st and 4th. If both schools fielded their top teams, the HUSKIES would have finished ahead of the Cougars, 14 points to 22. The HUSKIES top performers in the 4km race were Ashley Hinther (3rd - 14:35), Kristal Anderson (6th - 14:57), Jennifer Souter (8th - 15:14), and Jennifer Chad (9th - 15:20). |
