As I stepped into the role of provost in August, the university’s planning process was well underway. Many months of work, consultation and plan development have been completed. With appreciation for John Rigby and the office of Institutional Planning and Assessment (IPA), the process undertaken has been broad and inclusive—a truly collaborative pursuit.

In August, I was pleased to attend and participate in the annual senior leadership Summit meetings. The University Plan was a significant topic on our agenda. The richness of our discussion was evidence again of this university’s collaborative spirit. You will no doubt see this distinguishing feature reflected in the finished product.

Based on the input to date, a revised draft was reviewed again by the senior leadership forum on September 26. We will now engage in a final round of broad consultation and then preparation for approval by the university’s governing bodies—University Council, The Board of Governors and Senate.

I want to note that during this process, local planning within many academic and administrative units has been completed or is underway for this budget year. This is to be expected given the timing. Local plans are annual and so you can anticipate these plans evolving over the next year to reflect the goals of The University Plan following its approval. Through local plans, every member of our community should see themselves contributing to the goals outlined in The University Plan.

I look forward to our work together as we endeavor to meet what I expect will be bold and yet achievable goals. Together we can make great things happen for our university, our province and our world.

Tony Vannelli, provost and vice-president academic

Ambition of the university plan:

Through this plan, we will be the university the world needs.

Over the next seven years we will achieve our vision of contributing to a sustainable future by fulfilling our mission of leading interdisciplinary and collaborative approaches to discovery, teaching and outreach. Informed by our principles of connectivity, sustainability, diversity and creativity, we will engage our communities to discover and share knowledge and solutions that impact lives and create opportunities.
