Research: Trade and Marketing

Governing Transformative Innovation

Objective

Biotechnology-based commodity production is becoming increasingly concentrated in fewer countries while biotechnology-based novel foods are inherently niche products. Both these trends make it essential that international markets function effectively. A key challenge facing the farmers, companies and countries which produce biotechnology-based agri-food products is to gain market access and to position biotechnology products in those markets in ways that create sustainable market shares. If the industry is not successful in commercializing the new products, the private (and likely even the public) biotechnology effort will slow significantly.

Market access and consumer acceptance cannot be arranged by individual firms acting alone. Furthermore, the actions of one firm can jeopardize the prospects for the entire industry. This area requires significant further research to discover how the industry acting by itself, or in partnership with regulators, can overcome the barriers to commercialization.
