Presidential Search Update 2

Presidential Search Update #2 August 19, 2011

U of S faculty, staff and students,

The search committee is continuing its work to find a successor to President Peter MacKinnon, who is stepping down at the end of June 2012. With the help of a search consultant firm, Janet Wright and Associates, we continue to seek out candidates with the potential to lead our university.

Using feedback received during consultation with the campus and broader communities, we are developing a position profile. When complete, the position profile will be posted on the presidential search website ( This is scheduled to be completed this fall and will help us to narrow down the list of interested candidates.

We received a question regarding the confidentiality of the search after we sent out Update #1 on July 13, and would like to provide more clarification. Our search procedures require that, for a search to be confidential, the search committee must conclude, based on evidence, that it is in the best interests of the search that it be so. Our highly experienced search firm advised the committee that for a Canadian search of this nature, confidentiality is standard practice. Many of the top-level, experienced candidates we wish to attract will currently hold a position of leadership here or elsewhere. Confidential searches protect potential candidates who do not wish to jeopardize either their own career path or their institution as a whole by submitting their name for consideration in our search. Adhering to confidentiality standards strengthens our search by appealing more widely to the high-quality candidates we are seeking. Based on this advice, the committee determined that the search would be confidential.

We continue to welcome your feedback on key challenges facing the next president and the background, experience and personal qualities that the search committee should be seeking in potential candidates. Please provide your thoughts as soon as possible via email at

We will provide updates to the campus community as the search moves forward, including the work being done, any new information and changes to timelines. For more information about the presidential search process, including a list of search committee members, please visit our website at
