Presidential Search Update 3

Presidential Search Update #3 October 20, 2011

U of S faculty, staff and students:

The search committee, with support from search consultant firm Janet Wright and Associates, is now well launched in the process of searching for a successor to President Peter MacKinnon, who is stepping down at the end of June 2012. We continue to identify candidates through the nominations received from the university and wider community, as well as those identified through broader promotion by our search consultant.

While discussions between the search committee and potential candidates are confidential in nature, Janet Wright has reported that the feedback about the university has been very positive. Potential candidates are aware of our dynamic research, teaching and learning agendas, along with our well developed integrated planning process. We have been gratified by the level of interest from highly credible individuals.

We once again thank the university’s students, staff and faculty for your feedback. Your feedback has helped us identify key topics to discuss with candidates during the interview process, such as safeguarding the university’s autonomy, ensuring an appropriate balance of funding sources, and maintaining and strengthening our connections to communities around the province and beyond.

Key points raised during the consultation period have also informed the position profile, which is now posted on the presidential search website ( Overall, respondents agreed that our next president must meet several fundamental requirements including international recognition as an academic, a proven track record of managing complex administrative and financial environments and a vision that will inspire and sustain the university as it seeks its place among the top universities in Canada.

The next steps in the search process include narrowing down the list of potential candidates, followed by ongoing rigorous evaluation of the qualifications and experience of the individuals under serious consideration.

We will continue to provide updates to the campus community as the search moves forward. For more information about the presidential search process, including a list of search committee members, please visit our website at
