Separate major and Honours programs in each of Mathematics and Statistics are offered by the department. A Double Honours program in Mathematics and Statistics is also available.
Programs in Mathematics and Statistics
The following descriptions indicate minimum program requirements. Courses bearing the "MATH" and the "STAT" abbreviations are considered as being in different subjects. The number of credit units of "STAT" courses that may be included in a Mathematics major is limited. Please consult the following information for details.
Restrictions on credit for introductory statistics courses. Students with credit for STAT 103 are eligible to subsequently take STAT 241, 244, 245 or 246 for credit. Students may NOT take STAT 103 for credit either concurrently with or following STAT 241, 245, 246 or ECON 204. Students may take both STAT 103 and STAT 244 regardless of order completed. Students are not permitted to take more than one of STAT 242, 244, 245 or 246 for credit. Students may take STAT 241 for credit before, concurrently with, or after any one of STAT 244, 245 or 246.
Students with credit for an introductory statistics course offered by another department or college should consult the Statistics Course Regulations in the Arts & Science section of the Calendar and check with that academic unit for any other restrictions.
STAT 103, 241 and 341 are courses in probability. All other courses carrying the STAT abbreviation are courses in statistics.
Students who have not taken all of the required courses in their second year are encouraged to discuss alternate routes with the Head of the Department.
Students intending to enter the third or fourth year of a program leading to the Honours degree are required to consult with the Head of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics or designate for approval of an acceptable program.
In exceptional circumstances a student may be prepared to take a graduate mathematics or statistics course in the final year. Students wishing approval to take such a course and to count it towards the Honours requirements, should consult with the department's Honours Committee.
Students who complete an introductory course in statistical methodology that is essentially equivalent to STAT 242.3 may use such a course to satisfy the prerequisite requirements provided by STAT 242.3. However, such students will be required to add an additional approved 3 credit-unit course in statistics, mathematics or an area of application to their programs.
Students who are planning to do graduate study in statistics should follow the Honours program and supplement it with additional courses in mathematics and areas of application. An excellent preparation for such graduate study is a Double Honours program in Statistics and Mathematics together with courses in an area of application.
MATH 401 must be taken in both year 3 and year 4 of the Honours and Double Honours programs.
Students who have completed a major or Honours program in mathematics or statistics and who wish to complete an Advanced or Honours Certificate program in the other subject will be required to take at least 18 credit units of additional approved courses from the department's offerings, as well as meeting other college requirements.
Junior MATH course credits
Up to 9 credit units may be obtained from the first-year offerings in mathematics depending on the courses taken and the order in which they are taken.
Students may have credit for MATH 102.3 or MATH 104.3, MATH 110.3 or MATH 123.3 and MATH 112.3, MATH 116.3 or MATH 124.3.
Students may have credit for only one of MATH 102.3 or MATH 104.3, MATH 121.3 or MATH 125.3, and MATH 128.3.
Students many have credit for only one of MATH 102.3 or MATH 104.3.

Students may have credit for MATH 100.6 and other junior mathematics courses under the following conditions:
|
Students with credit for a 200-level or higher course in statistics except STAT 244.3 may not subsequently take STAT 103.3 for credit.
Students are strongly encouraged to consult the program requirements for specific majors to determine whether specific 100-level MATH courses are required or recommended.

Students interested in entering an Honours program should consult advisors in the department concerned before registering for their second year. Of the 120 credit units required for the B.Sc. degree, at least 66 credit units must be at the senior level. Application for admission to Honours is not considered until successful completion of at least 60 credit units with a Cumulative Weighted Average of at least 70% overall and at least 70% in the subject of Honours. For further details, please see the Degree Requirements in the Arts and Science section of the Calendar.

The following courses in Mathematics and Statistics are recommended to students in Arts & Science who anticipate entering the College of Education in their third year as providing appropriate preparation for teaching mathematics at both the primary and secondary levels. The programs have much in common with the B.Sc. Three-year degree (Major in Mathematics) and could, with some careful planning, earn the student an extra degree qualification at the end of the B.Ed. degree program. Yet another alternative for students who wish to teach secondary level Mathematics is to first obtain a B.Sc. Honours or B.Sc. Four-year degree (Major in Mathematics).
Students who have already earned a B.Sc. Three-year or Four-year degree (Major in Mathematics) may be considered to have completed teaching area requirements if that degree includes more advanced qualifications in Mathematics including MATH 258.3. Please consult the Calendar.
